Have you been lacking in motivation? Do you need to increase your productivity? Creating goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound will help you to get the right things done at the right time. That is the essence of productivity. Working on the right things at the right time. How do goals help you to achieve a productive state? Read on to find out.
1. You know what you need to do and when it needs to be done
If you have set SMART goals you have laid out the steps you need to take to reach that goal and determined the goal is relevant to you. You have also set time constraints on when you would like to accomplish each step. In other words, you have a to-do list. Once you start getting your to-dos to-done you can consider yourself a productivity pro.
This means sticking to the plan you set out. I have found the best way to stay on track is with a deep weekly review to map out your tasks and a quick refresh daily.
Things are going to get off track. We are successful when we see the obstacle and can recalibrate. Remember WOOP Goals?
I highly recommend the Frixion Erasable Pens for planning and recalibrating. You can find them on Amazon. The ink does go quickly especially if you are a heavy planner, but there are refills available for the pens so you are not consistently buying a new set.
2. You only say yes to those things that support your goals.
Setting your goals and planning the steps to achieve those goals allows you to say no to all of those items that don’t support your goals. Don’t waste time on tasks that don’t move you forward. Sure we will all have to complete tasks that aren’t on our goal to-do list, but when we have everything written down and scheduled you can see what you have to work on and say no to overscheduling yourself.
This means when you are asked to work on a project you can consider your goals and to-do list to see if you really have the time to prioritize something new.
If it doesn’t fit…Don’t say yes.
If it is a project for your boss and you feel you have to say yes then show her your schedule and plans. Give your supervisor a clear picture of what you have already committed to and ask what you should divert your attention from.
Saving your energy for what you have already planned will help you recommit to your goals.
3. It increases Your Motivation
Yes, setting goals and achieving them will increase your motivation. Increased motivation leads to doing more and focus. If you are new to goal setting start small, achieve the goal, and see your motivation soar. When motivation is high it is easier to concentrate and tick those things off your to-do list.
Jamie, you are so right about goals helping us know what to say yes to and what to say no to. I’ve struggled with this in the past, but as I get more clear about my goals and what I want to accomplish it’s easier for me to be choose wisely and say yes to things that will help me achieve my goals, and no to those that don’t!
My list of goals for the year has definitely helped to keep my to-do list in check. When I review my list I always ask if this is going to get me closer to my goals. If not, I try and take it off my list. Thanks for you comment.
We all need to be reminded of #2 as we can get caught up with overcommitting ourselves! Helpful post, Jamie.
Thank you, Sarah. I had to practice number two be declining a couple of events this week. I would have really enjoyed going, but the overwhelm was starting to set in. I refocused on what my goals are and was able to not feel guilty for declining those events. Thank you for your comment.
